Writing in Silmarillion fandom, playing with all the details of Tolkien's worlds, feels so weird to me because: no matter how studied up you feel for a particular bit of writing, there are always extra details that fuck you right up.
"Sure you're going to plop your protagonist down north of the mouth of Sirion. But have you seen the willow-meads of Tasarinan? Here's a bit of description from the Unfinished Tales."
And then suddenly the whole fic becomes a study on ecology and all the bits of Beleriand that we're about to utterly lose in the War of Wrath, instead of a light-hearted romp about birds.
